Recently Dianne Glasscoe Watterson, MBA, RDH responded to a question in RDH magazine that we would like to share with you.   Regarding the use of adjunctive antibiotics for periodontal infections.    Using our 11-microbes bacterial testing we will provide the doctor with a suggested antibiotic if necessary.    We know that periodontal is an infection and some infections need an adjunctive antibiotics.

Please see the attached article along with a position paper from the AAP.   Bacterial testing is a supportive tool when deciding when and what antibiotic to place a patient on for a periodontal infection.

Logging in:

Once you have sampled your patient and the lab has processed your DNA-PCR sample we will send you an email notification. This will let you know you have a result report to view on our online secure portal. You can also log in directly to our website. https://microbelinkdx.com/ The portal is super easy to navigate. When you log in you will find “Orders” and “Reports” button. Orders are pending orders, if you have sent us a sample and we are still in process it will be under “orders.” If you have result report ready to view you will click on “Reports” This is where all your patient result reports will be stored. Its super simple!  We can also provide a demo portal if you would like to check it out prior to submitting a sample.

Every report is a PDF file, so you can click to save, print or view the file and leave it for when you are ready. It will never leave; it will always stay on the secure server!

Pathogens:

Our 11-Microbes™ result reports are so easy to read. We have same result reports listed here on our website. https://microbelinkdx.com/easy-to-read-reports/  We are testing for the 11 periodontal pathogens that are linked to periodontal disease. The report: 

You will notice each colored bar has a black box. Anytime the bacteria go outside that black line the lab will give you a “suggested” antibiotic according to the bacteria present. We will also give you some “Treatment Considerations.” If you have further questions you can always contact us and we will help you as much as we can.  Also, if you would like recommendations on coaching/consultant companies that we work with who implement bacterial testing into new or your existing protocols we would be more than happy to help find a perfect fit!

You will see in the picture posted that we also provide a nice guide that can be given to patients that will explain a little bit about each pathogen and will also list a few systemic links. Tips on how to take a 11-microbes™ bacterial test

Taking a periodontal bacterial sample using our 11-microbes™ bacterial test kit is super easy but, here are some tips we want to share with you.

Sampling Tips: 

1.  It is always best to confirm the patient has not been on any antibiotics for at least 6 weeks.

2. If possible, go ahead and probe to locate the deepest pockets. The best (anerobic) bacteria harbor down in the deepest pockets!

3. Make sure and sample prior to using the ultrasonic. If you have used your hand scalers no problem, you can still sample. Several of the bugs we are testing for our scaling and root planning resistant so they will still be hanging around in the pockets.

4. Each kit comes with a pack of 5 paperpoints. Once you have used all the paperpoints in a pocket or on the tongue or implant etc you will place them into the vial. We need a least 4 paperpoints and no more than 6 in the vial for the lab to be able to calibrate it appropriately.

5. Regarding where to sample- the short answer is …the areas with the deepest pockets first, then the areas that show the most inflammation. This could be a crown area, wisdom tooth, old restoration, implants are also great to sample around.

Filling out our order form tips:

1. If you are a new customer that first time, we will need the doctor information filled out in detail so we can build you a customer file and we have all your info. Anytime after that we just need your practice name and what provided you want listed on the result report.

2. We need patient first and last name and DOB…this is a requirement for the lab to carry out the lab process.

3. Date of sample is also necessary

4. Deepest pockets and location you placed the paperpoints is for your information only. If you don’t want to list that, no problem. A lot of folks like to go back and sample the same pockets on their follow up tests again, totally up to you!

5. Allergies and smoking…this is necessary for us if you want a suggested antibiotic that will treat the infection your patient has.

6. Credit card info: Just give this to us one time and we will keep that file. If a card changes just call us and we’ll update. Please don’t feel like you must write the card number down each time we have it if not, we’ll call you.
